 October 2008 Highlights
APTN East / West APTN, Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples Television Network is scaring up a great October lineup with brand new programs and new seasons of some of our best-loved series. October kicks off with the premiere of the ninth season of APTN National News: Contact, followed by new seasons of fan favourites Rabbit Fall and Mixed Blessings. APTN’s movie nights are sure to be a scream as we usher in all hallows eve with Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Oct. 30) and The Seventh Sign (Oct. 31). It’s a great month of programming found only on APTN!
Making Contact Every week APTN’s news and current affairs team takes an in-depth look at what it means to be Aboriginal in the 21st century, and invites viewers to take part in the discussion. Join host Cheryl McKenzie and guests on APTN National News: Contact a live, national phone-in program as they push the boundaries and challenge perceptions of the issues of the day and more. The new season of Contact starts Wednesday Oct. 1 with a thought provoking and revealing episode on land claims; even the courts have ruled Indigenous land claims are valid, but government and industry have been slow to recognize them. Where do we go from here? Also in October: Is the mainstream media biased in its treatment of Aboriginal issues? Should the Canadian Human Rights Act apply to First Nations? Is this legislative move really about extending the rights of First Nations People? Contact wraps up the month on Oct. 22, with a two-hour special looking at Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s apology to residential school survivors and the Truth and Reconciliation commission. Will these initiatives lead to lasting change and hope for a better future? Now that an apology has been made, will survivors forgive like the prime minister has asked?
Mixed Blessings New season starts Oct. 21 It’s another season of the family APTN viewers love as Mixed Blessings presents more in the life of a blended family in small town Canada. Hank, a third generation Ukrainian with two teenagers, and Ruby, a Cree woman with four kids, ages six to 16, set up housekeeping together in a northern Alberta community. Last season they went through the trials and tribulations of joining the two families together. This year promises more of the adventures they face with a house full of kids and a town full of characters.
Falling into more adventure New season of Rabbit Fall starts Oct. 28 APTN fan favourite Rabbit Fall returns for a new season of mystery and intrigue. Violent crimes and unexplained events have some believing a supernatural force is at work in the remote town of Rabbit Fall. Métis cop Tara Wheaton rejects the theory but as the bodies pile up, Rabbit Fall tears away at everything she knows to be true. Could these bizarre deaths connect to something bigger than the town? Viewers will find out, when the new season begins!
Wings Over Canada New APTN programming Wings Over Canada presents a lighthearted look at Canada, its people, history and customs. No subject escapes the crew as they work their way from ghost towns and remote fly-in fishing lakes to gold mines in search of the next unique adventure. This APTN premiere lands on screens across Canada, bringing adventures from the remote parts of Canada to viewers all across the country.
Discovering Great Towns New APTN programming Discover the charm of small towns all across the country. Discovering Great Towns takes viewers on a beautiful journey from the north, south, east and west, exploring the hidden wonders that are our towns. Each episode is a new journey to destination that’s off the beaten track. And getting there is half the fun as the host travels to each week's destination by plane, train or motorcycle.
